The Western Cape Department of Education MEC Debbie Schafer in a statement said every teaching day is important and our concern is the continued orderly functioning of schools and general safety of all children.

This as Wednesday is Guy Fawkes Day and the WCED tends to see an increase in absenteeism in certain Cape metropole areas around this day.

MEC Schafer said irresponsible behaviour should be discouraged.  Ministerial Spokesperson Jessica Shelver said some learners do not attend school in order to participate in activities that are potentially dangerous and irresponsible.

Shelver added that all communities and parents should discourage such activities in their neighbourhoods.

She also said not only does it place our children's safety at risk, it also has resulted in further absenteeism at schools as some learners do not attend school due to fear of being attacked or targeted by the other children doing these things.

“We are appeal to parents and the community to work together to ensure minimal disruption in our schools and communities by discouraging irresponsible behaviour.” Shelver concluded.
