A collision involving a light motor vehicle and a truck left five people dead on the N14 in Kuruman in the Northern Cape.

ER24 Spokesperson Russel Meiring said when they arrived on the scene they found the light motor vehicle lay crashed beneath the large truck.

“Trapped within the light motor vehicle lay five male patients, aged between 27 and 35 years. Unfortunately four of the men had already succumbed to their injuries. The fifth occupant was found to be in a critical condition.” Meiring added.

Rescue services had to use the jaws-of-life equipment to free the critically injured patient as well as the four bodies.

He also said that once freed, paramedics treated the patient and immediately transported him to Kuruman Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Unfortunately the patient succumbed to his injuries at arrival at hospital.

The driver of the truck was apparently not found on scene.

The exact details to the cause of the accident will remain the subject of a police investigation.
