Roadblocks in the WC result in 25 motorists being arrested

Western Cape Traffic Authorities over the weekend conducted 24 roadblocks in the province whereby 2 273 cars were stopped and checked and 1 248 drivers were tested for alcohol.

Traffic authorities arrested 25 drunk drivers during the roadblocks.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said the highest reading was recorded in Worcester and one person was arrested Caledon for reckless and negligent driving.

Africa said the total amount of fines issued were R46 450 and we also tested the speed of 527 vehicles of which we prosecuted 120 drivers for exceeding the speed limit. The highest speed recorded in the province since Friday was 159 in a 120 zone on the N1 near Laingsburg.

Meanwhile during the roadblocks two people were arrested for false documentation in Oudtshoorn and another in Worcester.

Then two other people were also arrested in Worcester for being in possession of dagga and one person was arrested in Brackenfell for also being in possession of dagga. 

Also during the weekend fourteen deaths were recorded. Some of the pedestrian accidents over the weekend happened in Khayelitsha, Kraaifontein, Lentegeur, Stellenbosch, Milnerton, George and one on the West Coast road.

Africa said one driver lost his life in an accident in Strandfontein and another in Stellenbosch.

“Late last night a passenger died in an accident on the N1 just outside Paarl” Africa added.
