Cape fires leaves dozens displaced and one dead

Over this past weekend the Western Cape Fire and Rescue Services responded to six large fire incidents involving informal structures, whereby hundreds were left displaced and one person died.

Provincial Fire and Rescue Services Spokesperson Theo Layne said the fire incidents were reported in Lwandle, Langa, Mandela Park, Philippi and Barcelona.

“In Lwandle they had 50 structures leaving 70 people displaced, in Langa one adult male had sustained fatal burns, in Mandela Park 30 structures leaving 60 people displaced, in Philippi we had a 70- 80 structures leaving about 200 people displaced and that incident one adult female had sustained fatal burns.
In Barcelona we had 50 structures leaving approximately 200 people displaced, in Lwandle where we had 50 structures leaving 70 people displaced. Layne said.
