Tremors felt in Saldanha Bay, Cape Town after 3.5 minor magnitude earthquake

Minor magnitude - 3.5 earthquake - 41 km south of Saldanha, South Africa, on Monday, 16 November 2020 at 22:27 (GMT) reported Volcano Discovery. Tremors struck various parts of the northwest of Cape Town, even though the earthquake is reported that it did not cause any major damages but people still felt a minor shaking of the earth in up to approximately 100 km distance from the epicenter said Volcano Discovery.

According to Professor Andrzej Kijko from the University of Pretoria's Natural Hazard Center, mining can initiate earthquakes. He believes that 95% of South Africa's tremors are brought about by mining, particularly around the regions of Klerksdorp, Welkom and Carletonville. Reported by IOL, he said if Cape Town were to be hit by a large seismic event, there would be major damage to the city’s infrastructure and property.
