WCED concerned about Grade 9 pass rate,

The Western Cape Department of Education said it is concerned about the low pass rate of Grade 9 learners in the province last year.

Ministerial Spokesperson Bronagh Casey said the pass rate has however increased from 74% in 2012 to 77% in 2013.

Several interventions have been introduced by the WCED to improve the pass rate for Grade 9 learners in the province.

Casey said one of the main reasons for this increase is that we did implement a Grade 9 turn around strategy last year.  We had a number of interventions such as tips for success booklets for all our Grade 9 learners.  Our district officials worked with schools to ensure that their timetables reflect needs of that grade.

"However we are concerned about the pass rate of Grade 9 learners and we will continue to implement and create new strategies to improve these results further” Casey added.
