On Sunday, Justice Minister Jeff Radebe
reportedly said that a permanent head of the Special investigative Unit should
be appointed by the end of February.
The Democratic Alliance said they will
believe the statement when it becomes action.
Minister Radebe told Parliament back in August last year that the appointment was about to happen.
The DA said the appointment of a new SIU
Head is a test for President Jacob Zuma’s credibility.
Debbie Schaffer said under the acting head Adv
Nomvula Mokhatla, the unit has been plagued by allegations of politicisation
and irregular appointments to the point that the DA has requested the public
protector to investigate.
Schaffer adds that if the president is truly
serious about fighting corruption, the person he appoints must be independent and
prepared to investigate without fear or favour.
Schafer said the person must also have the qualifications
and experience required to conduct and oversee large scale corruption
investigations, have the leadership qualities necessary to take control of the unit.
Schafer further adds that the appointed
person must also investigate alleged irregularities in appointment and other
procedures and correct them and the person must also be someone with integrity beyond
question.
