The Portfolio Committee on basic Education has praised the Kwazulu  Natal’s Department of Education for putting in place proper plans to ensure effective teaching and learning for this academic year.

Chairperson of the portfolio committee on basic Education Hope Malgas said despite KZN having improved their grade 12 results, the committee wanted to see a more concerted effort towards improving learner performance in the intermediate and senior phases.

Malgas said that as the committee they know that in South Africa when it comes to foundation phase, the learners did very well.

Malgas adds that when it comes to grade 9 and grade 6, literacy and maths that the learners did not do so well.

Malgas said in the Western Cape there is a very high rate of drop outs in grade 9 and it could be common throughout South Africa, but Malgas said when it comes to KZN, they worked on a retention policy on how to put learners within schools and the committee has mentioned that this is a very successful initiative.
