Three teenagers between the ages of 10 and 15-years-old on Thursday died after they drowned at Leisure Island Knysna lagoon.

It is believed that the three were about 300 meters off-shore of Leisure Island and were swept by the strong rip current.  A fourth female aged 25-years-old survived the incident.

National Sea Rescue Institute Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said NSRI divers together with municipal lifeguards went into the sea and rescued the three girls.

Lambinon said after they were rescued and immediately CPR was initiated.  CPR continued in the ambulance on the way to hospital but when they arrived at the hospital and all efforts to save them were exhausted they were declared dead by doctors.

The Western Cape government has urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children at all times during the festive season.
