The Marikana Settlement in Philippi East is trying to stop the City of Cape Town from illegally destroying shacks in the area.

On Friday the group protested outside the Cape High Court whereby an urgent interdict was being heard.

The group said the city’s four-year plan to eradicate shacks in order to build new structures is not good enough.

The Marikana Settlement’s William Mabuya explains said they do not have accommodation and they are sleeping outside. We are fighting for the land, we do not have proper houses and we want proper houses.
