WCED says no major incidents on first day of school

The Western Cape Department of Education said over 950 000 learners attended the first day of school with about 100 000 new enrolments in Grade 1. 

MEC of Education Donald Grant said there are 4 new schools and 17 replacement schools under construction this year, and a further 11 new schools and 16 replacement schools are in the planning stages. 

Ministerial Spokesperson Bronagh Casey said there were no major problems on the first day of school but as the time goes some problems might arise, in terms of books and other stuff but the department is ready for anything.

Casey said there were vandalism at schools as it has been the case along the years.
