Protesting University of Cape Town
students have called on fellow students across the Western Cape to boost their
efforts in protesting against the suspension of students on campus.
Student activists this week
interrupted campus activities during solidarity demonstrations on campus, for
three students who appeared before a disciplinary court.
The hearings relate to
unlawful activities during the so-called Shackville protests in February.
They say a forced varsity
shutdown is expected, until university management notices their demands.
UCT, however, says while it's
willing to engage with the students, little can been done if no formal demands
are submitted to its executive.
So far, talks between
university officials and protesting students have reached an stand-off, with
students expected to occupy the Steve Biko Students’ Union Building
indefinitely.
