The Western Cape’s Health & Wellness MEC, Nomafrench Mbombo, has condemned the attack on Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel in Westlake over the weekend.
On Sunday, the ambulance in which the crew was travelling
in, was stoned in Westlake Village.
According to ward councillor, Carolynne Franklin, the
incident occurred at approximately 10a.m
‘’The reprehensible incident took place in Westlake
Village. There were no physical injuries to the crew but the ambulance has been
damaged. The crew have been removed from
shift and offered counselling. I urge SAPS to work with the community to bring
the perpetrators to book. This cannot be allowed to happen, at any time of the
day, in any suburb in Cape Town.’’
Western Cape police confirmed the incident and said they
are probing the matter.
MEC Mbombo called on the South African Police Service to
bring the perpetrators to book.
‘’Our EMS officials are the ones who provide live-saving
treatment and are playing a crucial role in the healthcare system, especially
during the festive season. I look forward to the investigation ensuring that
the perpetrators are brought to justice.’’
On certain occasions, paramedics have to attend to patients
in danger areas, which are deemed ‘red zone areas’. These areas are where
ambulance crews are not allowed to enter certain areas without a police escort.
