The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education had a long-week oversight visit to the Eastern Cape to inspect readiness in two worst performing districts in the province.

Committee Chairperson Hope Malgas has called on the Eastern Cape Department of Education to fix issues which require urgent attention including scholar transport and shortage of textbooks.

Malgas said when it comes to the shortage of certain textbooks, stationery and learner/teacher support material we requested the department, that where there is a shortage should be dealt with immediately and books delivered to the affected schools.

“We did discover within the Qumbu and Sterkspruit that there are certain schools that had an excess in textbooks and stationeries which is unacceptable” Malgas added.
