Two foreign nationals were arrested yesterday for corruption.
This is after member of South African Revenue Services confiscated a large quantity of illegally imported beauty treatment products from the suspects’ business in Wynberg last month, and detained the contraband until appropriate documentation could be provided.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Andre Traut says one of the suspects, the 21 year old male established contact with a Bellville SARS official and requested that an illegal release form for the products be issued to him in exchange for a sum of money to the tune of R10 000-00.
“During the transaction yesterday in the parking area of the Bellville Library a fictitious release form was handed to the suspects who paid a sum of R 5000-00.
The balance of R 5000-00 would have been paid upon release of the products” he said.
Besides the charge of corruption, the two suspects are also being investigated for illegally importing products without the necessary permits.
Superintendent Traut says the outcome of this operation proves that not every body is susceptible to corruption, and police are grateful for the cooperation which they have received from SARS to apprehend the suspects.
The suspects will appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
