Speaker of the National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, resigns with immediate effect

Speaker of the National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, has resigned with immediate effect.

In a statement, the now former speaker says she has resigned as both National Assembly Speaker and a Member of Parliament.

Mapisa-Nqakula sites that she wants to focus her time on dealing with corruption allegations against her.  She is accused of receiving over two-million-rand in tender bribes from a contractor to the South African National Defence Force, while she was the minister of Defence and Military Veterans.

The former speaker says her resignation does not mean admission of guilt.
