IEC official suspected of illegally transporting ballot boxes during elections is back in court

The Electoral Commission official charged with contravening the Electoral Act is back in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

IEC Area Manager in Msunduzi, Musawenkosi Mnikathi was arrested during general elections on 29 May.

Mnikathi stands accused of moving voting materials without a police escort.

He was arrested after the uMkhonto weSizwe Party opened a case on Election Day. In Mnikathi’s first appearance last week,the party embarked on a march calling for new elections.

The court dismissed his application to have the matter referred to the Electoral Court.

The Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court is expected to hear the case of an Electoral Commission official charged with the contravention of the Electoral Act.
