Western Cape Police officers detained two suspects on Wednesday onn two separate incidents.
Lwandle police were
patrolling when they acted on the sound of gunshots, which led them to an
address in Matshaya Street in Strand. Officers went to the scene and they found
a man standing in front of a tavern and ensued with a search.
“They confiscated a
pistol with ammunition after the man could not produce a valid license to be in
possession of the firearm. They detained the adult man for the unlawful possession
of a firearm and ammunition,” said Warrant officer Joseph Swartbooi, Western
Cape spokesperson.
In an unrelated matter,
Philippi East Crime Prevention unit responded to intelligence of a possible
storage facility for ammunition within their area.
Officers followed intelligence
and proceeded to an address in Lower Cross Roads. Upon entering the house, they
found a man attempting to hide an automatic rifle.
“Police officers
disarmed the man and continued to search the premises upon which they found and
confiscated 65 mandrax tablets, one sachet filled with methamphetamine, 1229
different calibre ammunition as well as a hijacked motor vehicle. They detained
the 35 year old man on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and
ammunition, possession of drugs and the possession of a hijacked motor vehicle,”
added, Swartbooi
Once charged, the
suspects will be making their respective court appearances in the Strand and
Athlone Magistrates’ courts on the mentioned cases.
