A square in central Cape Town has been named after Chief Albert Luthuli.
Mayor Patricia de Lille hosted the naming ceremony of the square between the Civic Centre and the Artscape complex this morning.
Luthuli served as president-general of the ANC from 1952 until his death in 1967.
Fifty years ago today, the freedom fighter also became the first African to be honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize.
The year before, the apartheid government had refused Luthuli permission to travel to Norway to receive the prize.
