Congress of South African Trade Union said
the new minimum wages for farm workers is another small step in the march
towards an acceptable income for farm workers.
The Department of Labour announced that
from the 1st of March the minimum wage for farm workers will
increase from R11, 66 cents to R12, 41 cents.
Cosatu Spokesperson Patrick Craven said the
increase is better than none and it is still clear that working conditions are still
not conducive.
On the other hand Cosatu said it is
important for farm workers to join a union so that the fight for further
improvements in the sector does not have to depend solely on the Department of
Labour, but is taken directly to the employers by a united, well-organised and
strong workforce.
Cosatu Spokesperson Patrick Craven said
urged the farm farmworkers to join trade unions particularly Fawu because they
can not solely rely on government intervention during sector determination,
they need to be organised and strong so that they can negotiate directly with
the employer to get a decent wage and that would afford them an opportunity to
buy back the food they produce.
