Metro police have arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol over the past weekend.
17 of those motorists were arrested in Khayelitsha while two were arrested in Mitchell’s Plain and another two were arrested in Bishop Lavis.
One motorist was also arrested for reckless and negligent driving in Strand.
On Saturday morning Metro Police Officers arrested three suspects for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
According to Deputy Chief Yolanda Faro, the officers were busy with routine patrols, when a “suspicious looking, silver grey Opel Astra with three occupants overtook them on Spine road towards Mitchell’s Plain”.
They followed the vehicle and ordered the driver to pull over on corners of Spine and Swartklip, an unlicensed firearm and ammunition were then found in the vehicle. All three suspects were arrested and detained at Lingelethu police station.
"Our Festive season plan has kicked in, you can expect even more road blocks and any person found driving on a public road, under the influence of alcohol, will be arrested," said Faro.
Faro said they will continue to clamp down on those who are disobeying the law during the Festive season, whether on the roads, selling illegal substances or on the City’s beaches.
