Cape Town is on lockdown for today’s World Cup Final Draw. At a media briefing yesterday, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa, along with National police commissioner, Bheki Cele, were confident that with more than 1 000 police deployed in the city, the draw would be incident-free.
Mthethwa said police, along with other government departments, started developing the draw’s large scale security plan in 2004, when it was announced that the country had won the bid.
Since then they have met with police heads from other host countries and completed simulations preparing them for threats on land, air and sea.
Units from the South African Defence Force including the Navy and the Army have set up bases in the city for the draw.
FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke announced yesterday that the Executive Committee meeting approved the increase of prize money for next year’s tournament from 261-point-4 million dollars to 420-million dollars.
The 2010 World Cup winner will receive $30m, the runner-up $24m, semi-finalists $20m and quarter finalists $18m.
