Some residents of Khayelitsha have complained that some lights in the main road have not been operational for over six months.

Equal Education Deputy General Secretary Daron Isaacs said, on the 8.5km stretch from Baden Powell Drive heading west on Lansdowne road only 11 street lights are working.

Mayoral Committee Member for Utility Services Shehaam Sims said the City is aware of the problem and that they have prioritise the roll-out of high-mast street lights.

Sims said the Khayelitsha is an extremely big area that consists of many sub-councils and that forced for the City to divide it into sub-council when restoring power.

She said from the 21st of January 2013 the City will be putting lights in sub-councils 10 and 24.

“The City has also discovered that there are a lot of illegal connections in some areas in Lansdowne road and we will make sure to disconnect those illegal connections” she said.
