A 6-year-old boy was on Wednesday shot with a stray bullet in his arm while he was walking with his parents to school in Elsies River.

The boy did not sustain major injuries and police believe this was a gang-shooting incident as the 6-year-old also had a 17-year-old with him and police believe the bullet was meant for him.

A 27-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting.  The Western Cape Education Department said this incident did not take place on school grounds.

Ministerial Spokesperson Bronagh Casey said the department can do all it can to protect learners while at school but incidents like this, whereby something happens within the community we need to relay on the police and the justice system to help us to ensure it keeps us safe.

“We do our won interventions in schools such as security interventions as well as counselling support as well as relationships with various organisations and community policing forums” Casey added.
