The Cape Town Refugee Reception Office will remain closed to new asylum applicants this was announced by the Director General of the Department of Home Affairs Mkhuseli Apleni.

The decision comes as a result of a judgment handed down by the Supreme Court of Appeal.

The closure means that asylum seekers who have permits issued at other Refugee Reception Offices around the country will not be assisted.

Scalabrini Centre Spokesperson Marilize Ackermann said at the moment we will pass on this announcement to people who come into our offices for information.  We will wait for the reasons for the closure which will be announced on Friday.

Ackermann said after Friday’s announcement we will decide what steps to take further if any.  We are very disappointed by the decision because it means that many more people will not have access to the asylum system in the Western Cape.
