The Western Cape Emergency Services has confirmed that ten school children were injured in an accident on Monday afternoon.

It is alleged that a bakkie carrying 25 children rolled at Botelary road near Kraaifontein. Western Cape Emergency Services Spokesperson Robert Daniels said the children were on their way home from schools.

Daniels said the driver of the bakkie lost control as it rolled injuring ten children as well as the driver.  Five children and the driver were seriously injured and taken to nearby hospital for further care.

Meanwhile the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works has strongly condemned the transportation of school children in bakkies.

Ministerial Spokesperson Siphesihle Dube said parents need to be extra cautious of vehicles that transport their children to schools.

Dube said vehicles transporting children to school especially overloaded vehicles are a big concern for the department.  Vehicles need to go through the proper safety tests to ensure that they are safe to transport these learners.

“It is very unfortunate that this accident happened and innocent children were injured because of a vehicle that was overloaded” Dube added.
