South Africa is reportedly sitting on a waste time-bomb.
According to the media reports, the country has nearly 200 unlicensed municipal landfills and an annual avalanche of 24 million tons of domestic and business rubbish.
The country is also battling to stem the flow of billions of plastic bags despite a 90-million-Rands national plastic recycling programme funded by cash-strapped shoppers.
Government is believed to be rushing to finalise its national waste management strategy, based on several expert studies which suggest that the trash problem is out of control.
