The University of Cape Town said the initiation practice is strictly prohibited.

The initiation is a practice done on first year students by the senior students at universities.

Most universities will reopen in February when thousands of first year students will start their tertiary education.

The statement made by the UCT comes after an incident where a student drowned in the swimming pool at the Potchefstroom campus of the University of the North West over the weekend.

The details of the student’s death are not known yet but police suspect he died during an initiation process.

UCT's Pat Lucas said they will closely monitor the orientation of the first years. He further said initiation is not allowed at all.
