The Road Traffic Management Corporation on Saturday asked  South African drivers to be careful, as the festive season is approaching an end.

Thousands were expected to travel accross provinces for the reopening of schools next week.

The RTMC said they were worried the death toll could rise even more over the weekend, where the current death toll stands near to 1,300 people since the beginning of December.

The corporation’s spokesperson Ashref Ismail said there would be a more visible police presence on major inter-provincial highways.

“Motorists are urged to obey traffic rules and regulations, buckle up, and to be prepared at all times” Ismail added.
