The SAPS in the Western Cape will launch the Safer Festive Season programme in Mitchell's Plain on Tuesday.
The national Safer Festive Season Operations launch was
first held in Limpopo, two week's ago. This year’s Safer Festive Season
Operations are being held under the theme: ‘’More boots on the ground towards
enhanced police visibility.’’
The plan entails focus areas which will be prioritised by
the SAPS throughout the festive season, amongst others addressing GBV and
Femicide, combatting aggravated robberies, drunk driving, illegal firearms, and
obeying the rules of the road.
According to the latest crime stats, Lentegeur SAPS
reported a 200% increase between April & June this year for driving under
the influence of alcohol and drugs compared to the same period last year. Harare,
Khayelitsha saw 28 more cases reported for illegal firearm and ammunition.
The Western Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant General
Thembisile Patekile, the SAPS management together with the Minister of Police
General Bheki Cele will be in attendance at the event.
In a statement, SAPS said the launch ushered in a
heightened period of police visibility until 31 January 2023.
