Amaphela sedans have been providing a taxi-type operation in areas where a gap in the public transport market had existed.

MEC Robin Carlisle handed over 100 letters to qualifying Amaphela operators from Gugulethu, Philippi, Nyanga and cross roads.

Spokesperson Sipheshile Dube said in the past, the amaphela were characterized by self regulated which resulted in poor vehicle quality and the safety of passengers being compromised and illegal operation resulting from overtrading.

“This is our first phase of regulation and we are hoping to continue to other areas in partnership with the City and other municipalities; the regulation of operations include the regulation of the vehicles themselves, issuing of operating licenses and subsequently drafting of a code of conduct” Dube added.
