FAWU strike against poultry imports

The Food and Allied Workers Union has embarked on a strike ON Wednesday, opposing the importing of chickens from outside countries.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa welcomed and supported the strike, highlighting the threats posed by the importation of chickens, saying the country’s poultry industry’s 40 000 jobs are already shrinking.

Numsa’s National Spokesperson Castro Ngobese said they firmly believe that this is a just cause by FAWU and urge progressive trade unions to join.

“This is not just about chicken import but jobs in the poultry industry; we are hoping that government will not have an option but to concede to this demand by FAWU in the interest of our country but also in the interest of saving jobs in the poultry sector” Ngobese added.
