The City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Law Enforcement Unit on Wednesday night did random checks on some taverns, clubs and bars.

This operation was done to ensure that the new liquor by-law is being adhered to.

Last week the City council amended some regulations on the liquor by law including that alcohol can be sold on Sundays.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said the intention is to try and reduce alcohol abuse and statistics show that liquor had a negative impact on violence.

Smith added that the operation that was conducted in Nyanga last year shows that the control of liquor had positive impact to domestic abuse and violence.
