Metrorail in the Western Cape today condemned the torching of trains.

This is after another train was torched in the Parow area this yesterday.

Cooperation Affairs Manager of Metrorail Zino Mhika said the damage to trains specifically setting trains on fire cost about R12 million to repair.

Mhika said that three Metroplus carriages were damaged, the fire destroyed one carriage and two adjacent carriages were damaged.

“We can not yet speculate in terms of the definitive cause of the fire, but early indications are that it was deliberate so we can refer to it as arson” Mhika added.

Mhika said that no injuries were reported and the train was not carrying passengers at the time; the train was later operational.
