A 27-year-old fisherman from Port Elizabeth had to be rescued on Monday after he flung across the engine room when the vessel went over a wave which resulted in him suffering from a laceration to his arm.
“On arrival on-scene NSRI medics treated a deep laceration to the patients right arm and he was brought aboard Spirit of St Francis II and transported to our NSRI rescue base where a private care ambulance transported him to hospital in a stable condition,” says St Francis Bay’s Station Commander Bob Meikle.
In a separate incident, Knysna volunteers were called in to rescue a fisherman who was believed to be suffering a stroke. “Our volunteers launched our rescue craft and illuminating flares were used to help the responding crew to guide the craft through the Knysna Heads big breaking swells,” says Knysna Station Commander Rein Hofmeyr.
Hofmeyr said two of the volunteers went on board and was able to stabilize the 50-year-old who was then taken to a hospital. The man is in a stable but serious condition.
