MEC of the Western Cape Theuns Botha said the fact that 76,000 people applied for jobs at the new Khayelitsha District Hospital was a wake-up call for government.
Khayelitsha residents protested outside the new hospital and demanded locals to be employed.
324 posts were advertised and 76,815 applications were received.
Health MEC said 40 percent of staff are from the area and added they worked hard to ensure the community was included in the process.
