Gauteng police have confirmed that they shot dead a man who had attacked a policeman with an axe in Temba, near Pretoria.
A spokesperson says the incident took place yesterday when police approached a 50-year-old homeowner who was accused of growing dagga in his backyard.
When the man saw the police approaching, he grabbed an axe and when he was apprehended, he swung the axe at the policeman.
A shot was fired and the man was fatally wounded. Police say they found dagga in the yard.
The officer's firearm was confiscated and an investigation has been launched.
