The Food and Allied Workers Union hhas welcomed the increased protection to domestic sugar produers. On the other hand Fawu rejects the notion and suggestion that there will be massive job losses as a result of this increased protection.

Fawu General Secretary Katishi Masemola said the increase will help create thousands of jobs in the manufacturing sector.
Masemola said we welcome what the  government has done because sugar imports from all over the world especially in subsidised countries like the European Union have a negative affect on employment, as well as on the livelyhood of South Africans.

“We welcome the increase tariff to protect our domestic sugar industry” Masemola added.
