The National Sea Rescue Institute in Richards Bay along with Paramedics responded to a request for medical assistance from the coal freight ship sailing form Madagascar to Richards Bay.

NSRI Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said a man on board a ship bound died of a suspected heart attack.

Lambinon added that the 45-year-old Philippine national reportedly suffered the attack on Friday, while on board a bulk coal carrier.

“on the arrival on scene the patient appearing to be in a stable condition, was secured into a stokes basket stretcher and lowered over the side of the ship onto our sea rescue craft where paramedics continued medical treatment,” said Lambinon.

The cause of death was being investigated by authorities.
