10 suspects arrested for robbing a post office in Macassar

Ten suspects were arrested on Wednesday for robbing a post office in Macassar. Among those arrested were two police officers.

It’s understood they robbed the Post Office in Hospital Street, Macassar, with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The arrest was part of a joint operation between the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement Officers, Metro Police, Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officers and South African Police Service (SAPS).

‘’The City’s law enforcement agencies, and SAPS detectives, finally caught up with one of these groups after they robbed the South African Post Office (the Post Office) in Hospital Street, Macassar, which is situated directly opposite the South African Police Services (SAPS) Station, ’’ said Macassar ward councilor, Peter Helfrich.

According to Helfrich, the Macassar and surrounding areas have been targeted by armed criminal groups for the last few months that have been allegedly hijacking residents, robbing businesses and kidnaping employees. It’s believed that these criminal groups do not live in the area.

“The community in Macassar and surrounding areas have been terrorised by these criminal groups for months. I am extremely happy that some of the alleged criminals have finally been apprehended. They have terrorised our community for long enough. There are certain businesses in our ward that are afraid to open their doors because of these criminals and some of our residents are afraid to walk or drive around in the ward.”

Helfrich called on police to prioritise the matter.

“I would like to make use of this opportunity to thank the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement Agencies and SAPS detectives for successfully apprehending these suspects. I have to say, I am extremely concerned about the alleged involvement of SAPS officers in these crimes. I call on SAPS management to urgently investigate this.’’
