Bonteheuwel residents prevented the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement Officers from doing their job, after they arrested a suspect who was in possession of a loaded firearm on Wednesday morning.
According to Ward Councillor, Angus McKenzie, officials
responded to a community tip off of a shooting that took place in Teak Road,
Bonteheuwel. He added that when officers arrived on scene they apprehended the
suspect and found a loaded firearm in his possession.
The suspect was subsequently arrested, but its understood a
group of community members insisted to attack police, which led to the suspect
fleeing the scene still in handcuffs.
McKenzie has condemned the incident.
‘’I want to appeal to the greater community to hold those
individuals accountable who protect gangsters and who fight those wishing to help
us make our community safer. This sort of behaviour is disgusting and
unbecoming of a community that has achieved so much. We must not allow
individuals to deter us from our greater goal, a safer Bonteheuewel.’’
‘’I want to applaud all the officers involved this morning
for their restraint in dealing with a very tense situation, I further want to
thanks residents who provided the tip off information and those that advised on
the whereabouts of the suspect,’’ added Bonteheuwel ward councillor,
Angus McKenzie.
This is not the first time residents in Bonteheuwel thwarted
police from executing their duties. In October 2022, residents hurled stones at
officers for arresting a suspect who was wanted for an attempted murder case.
