George Municipality switches on electricity in Thembalethu

Some Thembelethu residents in George in the Western Cape can now buy electricity through a prepaid meter system.

This comes after George Municipality switched on electricity for 100 informal settlement dwellers yesterday.

It is reported that residents were cut off due to illegal electricity connections in the area.

Previously, the illegal connections damaged the electrical infrastructure, and some residents lost their lives.

Mayor Leon van Wyk says this will make residents’ lives easier.

“The other aspect is it brings us electricity and makes life easier for our informal shack dwellers. We now have electricity that they can buy through prepaid meter” he said.
