A fire that broke out at Site 5 in Doornbach, Dunoon, on Monday afternoon, has left 500 people displaced and 120 structures damaged.
The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management says an
emergency call was received at approximately 16:40, of structures alight just
off Potsdam Road.
‘’70 firefighters and 18 appliances were on scene to manage
the incident, compounded by a change in wind direction. They extinguished the
fire at 22:35 – a firefighter was treated for an injury sustained on scene,’’
said Charlotte Powell, City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management spokesperson.

however they are busy finalising the post-fire assessment.
‘’DRM has established a Joint Operations Centre on site to
coordinate the response to the incident. No injuries or deaths have been reported
in the affected community. Infrastructural damage has been observed to 10
electrical poles, a water pipe and mobile toilet,’’ said Powell.
‘’Eskom personnel are on scene and the Departments of Water
and Sanitation and Solid Waste have been informed to render repair services and
clean-up of the area. Gift of the Givers, Islamic Relief and The Warehouse are
on route to provide humanitarian relief,’’ she added.
