The Democratic Nursing Organisation
of South Africa has expressed its concern regarding the closure of McCord Hospital in Durban
tomorrow.
The hospital is being closed due to
a failure to reach an agreement between hospital management and the provincial
Health Department.
Denosa said with the closure of the
hospital thousands of local patients would have to travel long distances to get
healthcare services.
Denosa Provincial Secretary in
KwaZulu Natal Cassim Lekhoathi said this closure of the hospital follows
a long chain of talks between the provincial department of health and the
hospital board, following financial problems in the hospital which
have threatened the operational running of the facility for some
time.
“We had hoped that the woes at the hospital would be a thing of the past when the provincial government had offered to take over the hospital early this year. But it appears that the hospital management could not agree to the proposal and that it still needed some form of shareholding in the hospital. We understand that this is the reason the talks are falling through” says Cassim Lekhoathi.
