Mpumalanga police are hunting for six awaiting trail prisoners who escaped police custody in Secunda on Friday through a toilet.

Captain Leonard Hlathi said seven prisoners initially escaped but one was arrested after he was caught shoplifting.

Hlathi said the prisoners escaped by digging a hole through the back of a toilet.  They then removed the toilet and broke the bricks and then they escaped.

“There were nine prisoners in the cell but two remained behind and did not escape Hlathi added.

An internal investigation to probe the incident is underway.
