A
major security operation carried out by Metrorail in conjunction with the Law
Enforcement in the in the Cape Peninsula has resulted in 17 people being
arrested for various crimes.
The
rail operator’s security guards located across stations and trains throughout
rush hour on Monday morning in a bid to boost security and reduce high-levels
of crime on trains and at rail stations.
Metrorail Spokesperson Riana Scott said the
task team composed of 80 heavily armed guards.
“We
will be targeting certain trains, these are trains where we received some words
about substance abuse and weapons.
We
were joined by MEC of Transport and Public Works Donald Grant to have a look on
the work that we have done. The number of people we have arrested, the items which
were seized, as well as a substantial amount of dagga.” Scott added.
