Western Cape MEC of Local Government Environmental Affairs and Development Planning Anton Bredell has welcomed a judgement handed down by the Constitutional Court relating to the question, whether a speaker of the municipal councillor may cast the deciding vote or not.

The issue relates back to 2014 when the Oudtshoorn municipality under its previous leadership voted on the budget for that year and after a deadlock in the vote, the speaker also had to cast a deciding vote.

Ministerial Spokesperson James- Brent Styan said MEC Bredell didn't agree with that decision and took the matter to court. The MEC won in the High court and took the matter further to the Constitutional Court to get the issue verified by the court which is now being done.

“We are glad that the court have found the matter in our favour.”  Styan added.
