Two suspects were arrested in Laingsburg, on Monday morning, for being in possession of and two tonnes of compressed dagga.
The Western Cape’s Mobility MEC, Ricardo Mackenzie, says
Provincial Traffic Services intercepted a heavy motor vehicle carrying 42 bags
of compressed dagga weighing two tonnes and with an estimated value of R4
million. They were also found with counterfeit clothing.
Mackenzie lauded officers for their swift action.
‘’Well done to our Provincial Traffic team, who go out
every single day, around the clock, to make the Western Cape a safer place for
all.’’
Meanwhile, 96 arrests were made by traffic officials for
various offences in the past week. Sixty-three of these were for driving under
the influence of alcohol. In the same period, 31 people lost their lives on
Western Cape roads – 16 were pedestrians, 9 passengers, 5 drivers, and a motorcyclist.
Officers also issued 8 180 fines for various traffic
violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness. Twenty-one vehicles were
impounded and 209 were discontinued for being unroadworthy. 267 speeding
offences were also recorded.
