Small fire breaks out at UCT

A minor fire broke out at the University of Cape Town (UCT) on Saturday morning, which impacted two vendors in the food court in the Steve Biko Students' Union building, alongside Cissy Gool Plaza on upper campus.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.

‘’As a result of the damage, these vendors’ outlets will be closed for repairs from Monday, 19 February 2024. Properties and Services hopes to complete repairs as soon as possible,’’ said UCT in a statement.

The higher education institution said at least two food trucks will be set up on the plaza, in the interim, to ensure adequate access to food for students and staff on upper campus.

‘’Students and staff are reminded that they can also use the outlets in the Chris Hani building. UCT will monitor the provisioning of food on Monday and make adjustments if needed to ensure the impact is minimal,’’ it said.
