The Congress of South African Trade Union said it fully backs the National Union of Mineworkers in their disputes in the construction and gold mining sectors.

About 90 000 workers represented by NUM embarked on a strike action on Monday.

Cosatu has called for employers to share profits with workers who risk their lives everyday in one of the most dangerous working environments.

Cosatu Spokesperson Patrick Craven said they are working in difficult conditions in construction site and deep down in mines, they clearly deserved a better return in wages.

“We fully support the demands which we believe they are totally reasonable by the unions, particularly in construction sector we have noticed many of the companies are refusing of meeting with these demands and those involved in the collision of price-fixing scandal,” Craven added.
